Functions of Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate exists mainly in the extracellular matrix or on the surface of cells as proteoglycan. Chondroitin sulfate found in cartilage is representative of its functions. Much of the chondroitin sulfate found in cartilage exists as a proteoglycan called aggrecan, forming a supramacromolecular complex with hyaluronan and link proteins. This complex forms the extracellular matrix of cartilage with type II collagen, peculiar to cartilage, which plays an important role in the cushioning mechanism of cartilage. Decorin, which exists in the skin in large quantities, adheres to collagen fibers and controls the formation of the extracellular matrix. Chondroitin sulfate found in other tissues is also involved in the formation of the extracellular matrix, as proteoglycan in many cases, exercising control of cellular characteristics, such as cell adhesion, migration, differentiation, and growth.

Chondroitin Sulfate and Eye Health
Although chondroitin sulfate exists in various tissues of the human body, it is also produced by the human body itself.
The amount of production, however, begins decreasing when a person reaches 20 years of age. It is reported that only 20 mg/day is produced in the bodies of middle-aged and senior adults, which is by far lower than the 400 mg considered necessary per day.
Actively taking in an external source of chondroitin sulfate to aid in the improvement of various symptoms caused by decreased chondroitin sulfate production by the body due to aging allows for each tissue to function more smoothly, helping to maintain eye transparency and eye health by delaying the onset of various symptoms caused by aging, such as presbyopia, senile cataracts, or myodesopsia.
The abuse of our eyes cannot be avoided in modern life, both now and on into the future. It will become necessary to actively take in chondroitin sulfate in order to maintain eye health.
